What is Vision + Voice?
Vision + Voice is an 8-week online program that guides you to clarify your vision and articulate your unique voice so you can more deeply engage with your practice and make your most authentic art.
You will gain real tools, strategies, and support to strengthen your art practice, allowing your voice to come forward. You will learn to recognize and move past creative blocks and navigate the challenges that arise in making art, supporting you to fully express yourself, from the inside out.
How This Program Is Different From Others
Art demands technique, but can fall short if it lacks vision and soul. This program is not about technique, but instead about your personal connection to your work, understanding what it is you want to bring forward in your art, and how to do that. Itâs about what already resides within you, expressing that through your unique visual language, and what supports you in bringing that forward and into your work.
In addition, there are many mindset challenges that we artists face in creating our work that can impede our growth and progress in our work. Often we are unaware that our mindset is what is in our way. In this program, we'll shine a light on these hurdles and, together, we'll identify where they show up in our practice and how to work with them.
As your coaches weâll be intimately involved, supporting you in the process of knowing your truth, and helping you to bring more of yourself into your art. Weâre committed to creating a nurturing and safe online space where we can do the work that is often connected to beliefs around who we are.

How It Will Work
The Vision + Voice Program will be hosted on a private, dedicated website. Each week, new video lessons and exercises will be added to the website. You can return to any of the previous weekâs content at any time, should you miss anything. We encourage you to ask questions or share your thoughts beneath each video lesson.Â
The program is 8 weeks of instruction, with one Rest Week mid-way. The weekly lessons are delivered via 3-4 pre-recorded videos, approximately 15-40 minutes each. All content is accessible for a full year after the program ends. Much of the content will be downloadable for you to keep.
In addition, weâll have weekly Live Coaching Sessions on Tuesdays at 12:00pm PDT, which will always be recorded for viewing later. The live sessions will be an opportunity to get your questions answered â providing you with concrete methods for developing your creative resilience and vision for your work. The weekly live sessions are an opportunity to share your experiences with like-minded artists and learn from one another. Understanding that other artists share the same questions and concerns as yourself can be quite powerful.
There will be a private Facebook Group offering connection with other program members through sharing your experiences, questions, and discoveries. The coaches will drop in from time to time, offering insights and comments as you progress through the Vision + Voice program.
Content Highlights
Youâll be guided through a series of experiential exercises and reflective assignments that will activate you, expand the idea of what art is about for you, allow you to see more clearly who you are as an artist, and where you may be sabotaging your efforts to make your creative work.
Together weâll explore and unpack areas of the creative process that are not typically a part of an art learning curriculum: working with intuition and intention, accessing your unique visual language and voice, understanding the self in relationship to art-making, the nature of the creative process, how to meet that with awareness and mindfulness, and much more.Â
Youâll be introduced to many specific strategies and tools to support your creative practice, helping you get unstuck and sustain you moving forward, such as:
- Sourcing inspiration and generating ideas from your own work, building direction and consistency in your art.
- Learning how to work with intention to focus your choices.

Program Outline
Here are the highlights of what will happen each week.
Module 1: Foundation
Week 1: Preparation
In Week 1 youâll get grounded and settled in. Our focus for the week is centered on the importance of making authentic work and how being connected to yourself facilitates that. Weâll discuss the mindset that will best support you in this program, and how to incorporate a sketchbook as a vital tool for ongoing learning and development of your art.
Module 1: Foundation
Week 2: An Inner Look
Making authentic work starts with you. So, this weekâs exercises and resources will help you uncover insightful information that will guide your process in this program and beyond. Youâll get a clearer understanding of who you really are, where you are coming from, and meeting that with acceptance and curiosity. Youâll learn all about creative resistance and how to best respond to it, along with unlearning and clearing out what doesnât serve you as an artist.
Module 2: The Work
Week 3: Excavation
In week 3 youâll be considering your existing work and work you are inspired by to understand what is present for you, what feels aligned, and what might be missing. Weâll look at the mindset challenges of Imposter Phenomenon, self-doubt, and unsupportive inner dialogues so you can emerge as your authentic self and trust your own creative process.

Module 2: The Work
Week 4: Articulation
Week 4 is all about honing in on what you want for your work and how that can be visually expressed. There will be a series of exercises guiding you through the process, leading you to clarify the vision for your work. Youâll discover whatâs possible for your expression through conscious experimenting, and weâll begin to explore the idea of working with intentions to enhance your clarity as an artist.
Module 3: Clarity
Week 5: Intention
This week youâll learn how to intentionally work with what you want for your art and visually express it. Youâll come to understand that working with intentions strengthens your work, and frees and guides you to make choices that keep you connected to what you want to express. Youâll learn the differences and the connection of intention to both play and intuition in your process and how all have a vital role. We encourage you to experiment with these new ideas in your studio work as you progress through the program.
Module 3: Clarity
Week 6: Distillation
In week 6 youâll learn how to bring clarity and potency to your work through distillation based on intention. Weâll look at how everything in your work contributes, keeping what is needed and letting go of what is not. You will also gain more knowledge around your mindset and managing creative anxiety, along with how to evaluate your work by developing your critical thinking.
Module 4: Practice
Week 7: Process
In this final module weâll look at our overall practice. In week 7 youâll gain a much keener awareness of the various stages of the creative process and how our mindset and responses can affect our work. When your practice and mindset are aligned itâs far easier to bring your vision forward, so youâll be offered strategies for successfully meeting challenges as they arise so you can progress and finish work.
Module 4: Practice
Week 8: Forward
In our final week of Vision + Voice, we will set you up to confidently move forward with your art and practice. Youâll be equipped with a Vision Brief for your work, keeping you focused on the intentions and vision for your work, and not falling backward into predictable ways. Youâll be able to anchor yourself with real tools and strategies to sustain you through any internal or external challenges you may face. Weâll also take time to reflect back on where you started and celebrate where you are now.

We are both working artists and have each spent many years seeking and uncovering who we are in our work. We have also coached and guided many artists over the years. In this program weâre combining our knowledge and perspectives on the creative process, offering you the opportunity to connect with and articulate your unique vision for your work. Our passion is to help you find your true voice and to bring that forward in your work. We believe this is the missing link for artists and we are inspired to begin working with you.
Cheryl Taves
Iâm Cheryl Taves, a Visual Artist and Creativity Coach. I have been a working artist since 2004 when I graduated from the Victoria College of Art. At that time what I was engaged with most in my work was critical thinking and looking at my work for its formal and conceptual aspects.
While this served me well, it also left a huge gap in my understanding of what it takes to be an artist. I struggled a lot and often felt completely overwhelmed by my internal dialogue, critical thoughts, and judgements, feeling deeply locked in my fear of failure. I found myself stalled, blocked, and resistant to making my art.
By 2014 I had almost given up on my art. It was then that I made it my mission to understand this patterning that was preventing me from taking risks in my work. What I came to understand was that my mindset was the greatest challenge I was facing in making my art, and just how powerful and necessary it was to cultivate a healthy and sustainable mindset to support my art-making.Â
In 2019 I launched Insight Creative, with a focus on helping artists discover how they can deepen their connection to themselves and trust the process of art-making. Through 1 to 1 coaching, and online Group Coaching Programs, I have assisted hundreds of artists to find the deeper meaning in their art practice.Â
Through my creativity coaching, I bring my passions for art-making and personal development together, and I have come to truly understand how to best support an artistâs journey.
I have a Diploma in Creativity Coaching through a partnership with Eric Maisel and Noble Manhattan Coaching and participate in, and co-facilitate, Critical Discussion Groups in Abstraction with artist Bill Porteous.
My mixed media abstract paintings reflect my interest in transitions, states of decay, and renewal. I am constantly pursuing a place in the work that embodies the essence of transmutation. My work is represented by the Jorge Mendez Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona.

My background is in advertising and design, where I created concepts and visually interpreted them to brand, position, and market clientsâ products and services. The whisper to be an artist was always present but often lost in the din of a corporate job and lifeâs expectations.
In 2010, I decided to start working on my art, which felt great until realizing I didnât know where to begin. After working for others for so long, I was lost to what I wanted to express for myself. This began a multi-year, self-taught journey to find my way back to me and what I wanted to bring forward in my art.Â
In addition to making my art, I have supported, guided, and coached hundreds of artists through the company Art2Life, and began teaching and coaching on my own in 2023. Teaching allows me to share the experiences and insights of finding oneâs path and making authentic and personal work.

Ideally if you have 2-4 hours per week to dedicate to the program content and another 2-4 hours to do the assigned exercises, youâll get the benefits of the program. .
Much of the work of this program is self directed and introspective â for good reason. You are on a path of self-discovery and inner reflection. Time spent with yourself, in this process, will offer you insights and opportunities for growth.
This program benefits artists who already have an art practice but want to develop further. The program is not about teaching techniques or how to make art, but rather how to think like an artist to make your most authentic work.
If youâre just beginning to make your art, this information will set you up for success and help you meet the challenges as you develop your approach to art-making. Some of the content may feel ahead of where you are, and while this may sound like a limitation, we believe that this is essential information for any artist to know at any stage of their development. Youâll have access to the content for a full year and can revisit it often, integrating it into your practice.Â
Youâll also more clearly understand the creative process, the importance of mindset, and working with intention to bring your vision for your work forward â an understanding that may have taken you years to come to know and experience on your own.
This is an online program and youâll need to have some basic technology and basic experience with it. The Vision + Voice Program is hosted on Kajabi, a private website that youâll need to login and follow basic navigation.
Our weekly Live Coaching Session will be hosted through Zoom, an online platform, which will require you to have a desktop computer, smartphone or iPad with a built-in microphone in order to ask questions or participate in the Live Sessions. If you donât have access to a microphone youâll still be able to join in and listen to the sessions. There will be an opportunity to write in your questions ahead of each session for us to answer during the Live Session, which we strongly encourage.Â
 We will also have a private Facebook Group as a part of this program. While itâs not a requirement that you join Facebook to be in this program, you will not be able to access this Facebook group without a Facebook Profile. All the program content will be available to you on the dedicated Vision + Voice program website, but the Facebook Group will no doubt be home to some rich interactions with the program participants.
Most of the weekly assignments and exercises can be done in your sketchbook, or on paper. In other weeks you'll be encouraged to apply what you're learning to your studio work.
We recommend:
- A sturdy hardbound or spiral bound sketchbook that works for you.
- Drawing or mixed media paper
We understand that life comes with interruptions and plans can sometimes not align. All of the program content for each week remains on the website for you to access when youâre able to return to the Program. The Live Sessions are recorded and can also be accessed on the website.
You can work at your own pace, but we strongly recommend that you follow the program content as it is laid out, week by week, as it builds on itself and takes you through a progression that will enhance your experience.

The purpose of the Vision + Voice program is to provide you with a focussed and in-depth experience related to how youâre thinking and responding to the act of making your art.
